Why Did I Become a Music Therapist?

I originally wanted to become a music educator, but ended up hating my courses. I was in a psychology class at the time that I loved, so I changed my major, but kept a music minor... Fast forward a year and I really missed my music classes. I decided to double major in music and psychology. At that point, I figured the only thing that I could do was become a music therapist.

I don't remember the first time I heard about music therapy or it's option as a job, I just always remember it being an option. I got my first job working in the psychology field and was about to observe a client at a music therapy session. My course was then set and I applied to a graduate equivalency program in music therapy at Drury University in Springfield, MO.

Over the course of the years, I figured I would just keep working with adults with developmental disabilities once I was certified as a music therapist... Much too my surprise, I did not enjoy those sessions in practicum as much as I thought I would. Right before I was getting ready to head to internship, I was placed in a music therapy practicum working with adolescents in a substance abuse recovery program. I had finally found my niche! I interviewed and was accepted to an internship where I would work with clients who have been abused or neglected and their non-offending family members. I fell in love with the crisis intervention and mental health populations at internship.
